Hiking the Five Lakes Trail

If you're looking for a great hike that offers up incredible views of the surrounding mountains and five lovely lakes, then the five lakes trail is definitely for you! This hike is easily accessible from the house—just about a half-mile from the chalet—and moderate in difficulty, making it perfect for visitors of all ages and experience levels. This is a 6-miles out-and-back hike that ascends 1,100 feet and rewards with pristine glacial lakes at the summit. Take a half-day adventure to march up to where Alpine Meadows meets the Olympic Valley, on the backside of the famed KT-22 lift. Specialized footwear is not essential, but you want something comfortable with a sturdy tread. Trail runners, cross-trainers, or other types of lightweight sneakers with a good, grippy tread should be just fine, but do watch your footing to avoid twisting an ankle.
From the chalet, walk west on Mineral Springs (towards the ski resort), turn right when the road ends at a T intersection (John Scott Trail), and cross Bear Creek on the bridge. Once across, turn left on Deer Park and follow it directly to the trailhead on Alpine Meadows road. From the trailhead, there are plenty of signs to help you find your way along this popular trail.
The hike up is hot and exposed for the first half, so bring plenty of water and pace yourself. Halfway up you’re rewarded with views of Alpine Meadows Valley. Make it to the top and five clear lakes await. The best swimming is on the westernmost and farthest lake. Take the main trail to the sign that reads “no lakes beyond this sign” and cut hard left.
